Entity Chapter 1

The End of a Beginning

By Marle's Boy

The first thing that went through Crono’s mind after he leapt on the balloons with Marle was that this was a really bad place to be. The next thing was that this was the perfect place to be. As long as Marle was there with him, he couldn’t ask for a more romantic finish to the quest that had brought them together. As they floated through the night sky, he began to wonder more and more about……………….

“Marle?”

“Yes?”

“When did you first realize…………….about us?”

“What do you mean? Us…………….you mean why did I decide to come with you? Because you looked like you knew your way around the Millennial Fair, you were an a-“

“No, not that,” he cut her off. Marle could ramble on for hours when she wanted to, and she had often done so during the long evenings camped in the forests and mountains of Guardia Kingdom, telling him more than he could ever have hoped to know about her, her desire to see the world, how King Guardia had prevented this through his desire to protect her from the world. But they would have a long time for another talk now, up here among the stars……………..

“Crono!” Marle jolted him out of his reverie. “Thank God, I thought you were starting to drift off.”

Crono smiled warmly.

“Would that be such a bad thing? You could probably sleep now if you want, I imagine it will be a long time before we get down. In fact……………hold on tight for a moment,” and as soon as she did, he momentarily let go of her to tie the balloons to his arm. Marle nodded slightly.

“That’s better…………..now I suppose you can drift off…………..as long as one of us is always awake to hold onto the other” Crono realized what she had meant about him drifting off, and he cringed at the idea that his hand might have slipped off the rope. Not for him, but for Marle.

“Now what did you mean about……………” Marle continued, but Crono just smiled and shook his head.

“Just watch,” he said, and pointed with his foot out behind her. He began to hum some appropriate music. It was a piece he had known since he was very young, too young to remember……………. Marle looked at him, pleased.

“Is that………..?”

“Yes?” Crono asked.

“It IS!” she exclaimed. “That’s that old song……….’To Far Away Times.’ I love that! And it’s so old……………Frog-I mean, Glenn knew it too!”

“He did?” Crono was amazed.

“He sang some words to it once…………….and I recognized the tune. The words……if only I could remember them! They must be lost with time, I’ve never heard anyone else sing it. Do you think it was written to-all of us? You, me, Lucca, even Doan………”

“Maybe,” was all Crono had to say. “Look,” he said, and pointed back again.

Marle looked back and relaxed. The beauty of the land lit in moonlight, coupled with the wind rippling their hair, the fireworks from Leene Square………………no, she realized, it was Nadia Square now. With the placement of the new Nadia’s Bell, a gift from her father, there was now a lasting monument in Guardia to its princess. After all, Marle was the only princess ever to help save over sixty-five million years of the Kingdom. And that bell was also what had sent them up here, she thought. And now watching this spectacle from Crono’s arms, far above the very spot where they had first met………………… Marle was surprised by the turn her thoughts had taken……………….Crono’s arms…………Crono…………………………………..Crono…………………………………….

And with that, sleep found her flying far above the land of the Guardia Kingdom she so loved.

Crono, Realizing she was asleep, tried to shift her into a more comfortable position……………..but with one hand tied to the balloons, it seemed he was already doing his best………………but he……………..would……………………………try…………………………………………..and so he fell asleep as well.

Author’s notes:
“To Far Away Times” is the official title of the ending sequence music to Chrono Trigger, but it has been worked in as an ancient song.
