Battle Square Duel And Secret Duel
The duel can be tough if you are at too low of a level, or if you don't have the right equipment. You should come equipped with a Ribbon, Escort Guard, Double Cut (or even better, the Deathblow materia combo in the Materia Combos section), Counter Attack, Enemy Skills (with Big Guard), HP & MP Plus, and Escort Guard. To win at the duel, you must gain battle points (they disappear when you leave Battle Square), which are given to you for winning battles (you get different amounts based on which handicaps you take). It really only depends on which handicap you take on for the final round, so go for something like All Materia Breaks, or Green Materia Breaks. For all the others, go for conditional handicaps if you have a Ribbon, Cure, Lucky 7, or Level 5 Down. These have pretty much no effect on you. Just try to avoid Accessory Breaks at all costs if you're using a Ribbon, and anything else that is a big part of your gameplan.
I usually go in with the items listed above and have a pretty simple gameplan. I use Big Guard right away, do give myself Barriers and Haste. Cast it again if an enemy casts Slow on you. I use the Deathblow combo, and just keep using that. A critical hit, regular attack, and steal combo can be helpful here. If you get some kind of handicap that would prevent you from using it, go with regular attacks, Limit Breaks, Enemy Skills, and other magic.
Once you have enough battle points to get Omnislash and W-Summon (see below), and you have already received Ultima Weapon, you can access the Secret Duel! Equip all three and go into Battle Arena, where you will be asked to compete in a duel for only the best. Man, they weren't kidding! You are up against such enemies as Behemoth, Max Chimera, and Proud Clod BY YOURSELF! Not very easy... Unless you have Knights of the Round and Mime materia! Just cast KOTR on the first enemy and then keep Miming it (you may want to cast Big Guard first). It kills all enemies in one shot, except for Proud Clod, for whom it may take two shots. Your first win here earns you Final Attack materia, while wins after that will give you Dio's diaries and autograph (yippee), and a Ribbon!
